Another United legend to tour old Trafford as a director of football

Edwin van der Sar admits he would be open to a return to Manchester United.

The Dutch legend has been tipped to take up a director of football role at Old Trafford as United chiefs plot a management restructure.

Van der Sar is currently CEO at Ajax and has played a key role in building the current side that has reached the last eight of the Champions League.

He insists his immediate focus is on the Eredivisie giants but he has opened the door to a future move back to Manchester.

“I know United is a much bigger challenge than Ajax. United is not just a big and famous club, but also a worldwide brand,” he told the Times.

Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] is doing a great job at it. But also Ed. I have utmost respect for him, what he does for the club.

“So I don’t need to be the big man. I want to feel I contribute, and you can only do it for something you believe in.

“United is a special place. Who knows, eventually? But for the coming years I’m here.”

Solskjaer has admitted he is open to working with a sporting director following his appointment as permanent boss.

“Football has changed and the structure at football clubs have changed,” the Norwegian said.

That’s just the way football goes. A manager can’t do as much as he used to do when my gaffer started, for example.

“Me and Ed and Joel, we are looking at how can this club be run as smoothly and as well as possible.

“We’ll see what the club will end up with and I’m happy talking and discussing football with knowledgeable people in the right positions.”
