Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given his players a points target in their final seven games of the season, as he sets his sights on a
Solskjaer believes they should now set their sights on finishing ahead of top-four rivals Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.
“It was the start of the rest of the season for us and if we can get 15 points from our last seven games, we’ll be top three,” declared Solskjaer, who won his first game since his appointment as United’s permanent manager last Thursday.
“They made it difficult for us and it seemed as though we were still on holiday or the international break. Both teams feel they should have points.
“Today will have done us the world of good fitness-wise. We know how hard it is to play against Wolves (on Tuesday night) so we need to make sure we have a team fit and available.
“When this club as winning trophies, we didn’t play well in every game but we lacked zip, urgency, and fitness in this game and the win is all that matters now.
“This game showed that a few players have been injured, not really 100 per-cent match-fit yet, but we got through it and that’s important. We started off sloppily. The first 15-20 minutes, I think Watford deserved to get the lead. It was almost like we were waiting for them to score.
“We managed to change the system a little bit and got into the game. Juan (Mata) got into the game for us. We created chances. We scored a great goal, could have had more goals because it was end-to-end in the last 20 minutes of the first half. The second half was disappointing, again.”
United defender Luke Shaw was equally unimpressed with his side’s efforts, as he didn’t hold back in his criticism after a nervy display at Old Trafford.
“We were awful in the second half, we were lucky with the result. The most important thing is the three points,” he stated.
“We had a few chances but we didn’t take them. We need to get ourselves together again and focus on Wolves. We want to go there and get the win.”
