Forget Tabichi; meet humble driver who gives almost entire salary to orphans

After celebrated Peter Tabichi won the teacher of the year award for his charity work and giving up to 80% of his salary to needy students, a driver in Thika who works in Delmonte has impressed many people as he reportedly uses 70 percent of his salary to clothe, feed and visit orphaned children in a certain orphanage.

The driver is a father to three kids, whom he still manages to take care of even after giving out such a huge part of his salary which is only Sh35,000.

The people living around the orphanage say that they are always impressed by the driver’s kindness because the kids who were hopeless in life now look very hopeful and happy.

“My decision to use 70 per cent of my salary in aid of needy children was after I saw many children suffering in the streets with no one to take care of them,” says the driver who asked not to be named.

Tabichi won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize for his “exceptional” commitment to the pupils of a school in Kenya’s remote Rift Valley region. “If you don’t fail, you don’t learn, and if you don’t learn, you can’t change,” says Tabichi.

Tabichi’s achievement has garnered support and praise from all over the world. Some notable ones include a congratulatory message from Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, who said, “Peter, your story is the story of Africa, a young continent bursting with talent.

The founder of the prize, Sunny Varkey, is quoted as saying that he hopes Tabichi’s story “will inspire those looking to enter the teaching profession and shine a powerful spotlight on the incredible work teachers do all over Kenya and throughout the world every day”.
