An unsuspecting tourist at the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda met an unprecedented incident when she was ambushed by gunmen, who took her hostage together with her driver.

The gunmen have in a new row demanded to be paid $500,000 (Sh50 million) ransom for their release.

35-year-old American Kimberley Sue Endecott and Ugandan driver Jean Paul were on a game drive when the incident took place. They are reported to have been kidnapped by four men.

The hostages are said to have been together with an elderly couple, who reported the case, as they were also robbed of their property.

“I suspect the kidnappers left them because they were elderly. They took all their possessions,” said Ugandan government spokesman Ofwono Opondo.

The U.S. embassy in Kampala had no extra information to offer. “We take seriously any threats against U.S. citizens abroad. Security forces are responding to the incident,” it said in a statement.
