Chang’aa traders in Mathare burn down school in protest

A section of Mathare residents have blocked Juja road in a protest against officers who have been fighting the sale of illicit brew in the area.

The residents who are mostly traders and consumers of the brew say want the operation by police officers in the area to stop.

The angry protesters burned down houses in the area as they called for an end of what they termed as unfair treatment by police.

Police officers in the area raided chang’aa dens in the area on Monday pouring every illicit brew found at every premises.

The protesters engaged police on the busy Juja Road for the better part of Wednesday morning.

The traders who engaged police for the better part of Wednesday blocked Juja road before burning down Maji Mazuri primary school.

Reports indicate that a number of pupils were injured in the scuffle between the police and the protesters.

The protesters had taken to the streets after police raided their chang’aa dens on Monday.
