Ariana Grande took to social media Tuesday, responding to a fan who brought up a notable lyric in her new single Monopoly which suggested she has bisexual leanings.
In the new track alongside her friend and fellow artist Victoria Monét, the Thank u, nextsinger, 25, and Monét repeat the lyric, ‘I like women and men (yeah).’
The statement wasn’t lost on a Twitter fan who, without judgment, noted that the Boca Raton, Florida native put it out there.
‘Ariana ain’t gotta label herself, but she said what she said,’ wrote, the fan, which received a response from the Grammy-winning performer.
Grande responded, ‘I haven’t before and still don’t feel the need to now … which is okay.’ (An insider told People Tuesday that Grande ‘is, of course, a well-known LGBT ally and this is her supporting her friends.’)
Fans of the ‘7 Rings’ singer spoke positively on the comment, as well as the social responsibility she holds as a role model to so many.
‘I agree with this but I also do get why queer people want celebrities to latch onto in many cases because it means them feel represented and less ‘alone,’ one user wrote. ‘I know this was a big help for me growing up especially with stars like Lady Gaga being representation.’
Another wrote they were ‘so incredibly proud of’ Ariana, revealing the trickle-down effect Grande’s words had in their personal life.
The fan said: ‘I’m so incredibly proud of u. I’ve been in the closet for so long and I just came out to Twitter and my sister today and I feel so good.
‘Thank u not only for helping me just by being u but for giving me such beautiful mutuals to help and support me along this journey.’
Her collaborator on the single, Monét, 25, revealed her bisexuality last November, tweeting, ‘After coming out, this thanksgiving coulda went waaaay left!! But she love meeeee how I am and I ’m so happy.’
Grande has past been in high-profile romances with Saturday Night Live comic Pete Davidson, her former fiance; as well as recording artist Big Sean, dancer Ricky Alvarez, and late rapper Mac Miller.
Grande has a pair of dates this week on her Sweetener tour, as she plays Wednesday at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, with a Friday show slated for the Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit.
