82-year-old Algerian president finally resigns after mass protest

Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is resigning after weeks of mass protests, state media report.

Mr Bouteflika, who has been in power for 20 years, had already dropped plans to seek a fifth term as opposition to his rule grew.

Lawyers had told him that they will not observe the elections if he will still be running for president.

The ailing president who controls the country from a wheelchair got a stroke in 2016 and has never been since in the public despite winning elections in 2018.

The mass protests which has gone for weeks now has finally yielded fruits after the president announced his resignation through the state media.

The army had announced that the president is incapable of running the government and had backed up the protesters.

Protest leader, Mustapha Bouchachi, told international media that before the announcement that any decision by Mr Bouteflika to quit would still change nothing and that the protests would continue.

The protesters added that they want all the leaders under Bouteflika be removed for a new regime to rule.

Algerians have started celebrating the good news.
