Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine has been arrested over a Sh84.7 million fuel fraud at the county.
This is after the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji ordered his prosecution with 13 other officials following a probe into graft claims.
“The investigations established that the governor was trading with the County Government through Oryx Service Station for the supply of fuel since 27th March 2013 to date. The governor failed and or neglected to disclose his interest in the said service station. It is clear that the governor engaged in conduct that is expressly prohibited in law,” the DPP said in a statement.
According to Haji, the governor is expected in court Tuesday morning to face abuse of office charges and those of conspiracy to commit an economic crime.
“During the period in question, Oryx Service Station received a total of Sh84,695,996.55 from the County Government. The aforesaid amount was shared between the governor and his proxy Hesbon Ndathi. The payment received by the said service station was facilitated by chief officers in contravention of the law,” he stated.
“I have reviewed the file and I am satisfied that the persons named herein actively participated in the perpetration of criminal activities and should therefore be charged and prosecuted with conspiracy to commit an economic crime, abuse of office and conflict of interest.”
Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are looking for his deputy Julius Leseeto, County Secretary Stephen Letinina, Chief Finance officer Daniel Lenolkirina, former Chief Officer in charge of environment Josephine Lenasalia and several other chief officers.
