We are now moving from water from mountains and natural springs to water that comes from your body. No, I’m not talking about your pee but your burps. Yes, the gas that is released by your stomach that’s released through your mouth.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has developed a revolutionary water bottle that turns your burps into fizzy drinks.

During his year aboard the International Space Station, Kelly frequently suffered from gas, due to the high level of carbon dioxide on board the orbiting spacecraft.

He was inspired to create the bottle by the carbon dioxide removal system on the ISS, which reminded him of his SodaStream back home.

He realised that this mechanism could be used to harness people’s excessive CO2 levels back on Earth, “and turn it into something awesome”.

When he returned to Earth, Kelly got in touch with SodaStream, and together they created SodaStreamME – a water bottle that enables you to carbonate your own drinks.

The bottle uses nano-space technology to convert excess gas expelled from the human body into pure sparkling water.

As the user blows into the mouthpiece, a mechanism in the neck of the bottle filters out other gases and bad smells, before infusing the liquid with pure carbon dioxide.

The result is fresh sparking water, crystal clear and ready to drink.

“SodaStreamME is perfect for any occasion,” said a SodaStream spokesperson.

“After having a supersized salsa, bean and cheese burrito, in the elevator with your boss, or for a successful romantic night.”

SodaStream is available now for Ksh2,800 on SodaStream.me and will be rolling out in UK pharmacies over the coming months.

Anyone who orders the bottle through SodaStream’s website will get a free snorning adaptor, so you can “start making soda in your sleep”.
