Stella Nyanzi: The iron lady who Cursed Museveni’s mother and Paid the Price

As Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni enjoys his rides on the SGR train in Kenya, one of his victims is rotting away in a Ugandan Prison.

Former Makerere University don, Dr. Stella Mwangi  has been in remand at Luzira Prison since November last year on charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication against Museveni.

According to detectives, the offences happened on September 16, 18 and 19 consecutively on Facebook.

Dr Stella Nyanzi

The Facebook posts allegedly insulted President Museveni and his deceased mother right after the former’s 74th birthday.

On the said debatable posts, the activist allegedly called upon President Museveni’s deceased mother, Esteri Kokundeka, to come take her son away since he’s torturing and murdering Ugandans and looting the country’s resources. Dr. Nyanzi also attacked Esteri for raising and looking away as her son continued to cause suffering to Ugandans.

Stella embodies the terms “outspoken” and “fearless”. She is a Ugandan academic, mother, feminist, a forthright activist and a leading voice in the women’s rights movement.

In 2016, she shocked the world after she stripped to her knickers to protest against Mahmood Mamdani, Director of Makerere Institute of Social Research after being locked out of her office for refusing to teach; a requirement outside of her contract.

She has also attacked Ugandan first lady Janet Museveni, who also doubles up as the Education Minister.

In December, Makerere University unceremoniously sacked the celebrated human rights activist. In January, she revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage while in hospital.

Kenyans are now asking for Museveni, to release the lecturer unconditionally.

Museveni will be giving a lecture at Kenyatta University on Friday afternoon and activists have urged students to disrupt the lecture.

There is one time @BenjiNdolo attempted to disrupt @KagutaMuseveni speech at the intercon. He succeeded for a minute before he was kicked out. He was alone. Kenyatta University has thousands of students, please boo #Uganda dictator even if it’s from a distance. #FreeStellaNyanzi https://t.co/8UXKvvDAMd— Boniface Mwangi (@bonifacemwangi) March 28, 2019

Museveni has used his brutal police to stamp authority on dissenting voices. Bobi Wine and Kiza Besigye are some of the position members who have felt his might.
