Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has set federation’s election for October 2019 and the current president Nick Mwendwa is arguably the front runner for the body’s top seat.

This after Mwendwa announced his intentions to defend the seat.

Mwendwa said the exercise will commence in October at the branch level.

“We want to start polls at the branch level which we expect to spend around Sh21 million at the 47 Counties, whose officials will be elected by members of the regional league teams, Division One and Division Two teams and some National Super League sides, then the elected branch officials, selected clubs and groups elect national officials,” he said.

Mwendwa, who was elected FKF president in 2016 is eligible to serve a second and final four-year term at the helm of the federation.

The recent successes of the national football team – including qualification to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations – rank as some of Mwendwa’s top achievement.

No challenger has come out to formally declare an interest to unseat Mwendwa, although his predecessor, Sam Nyamweya, SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri and former Vihiga governor Moses Akaranga have been mentioned as some of the likely candidates for the job.

The federation is however yet to announce which body will oversee the exercise or the actual date for the national elections.
