Tragedy strikes as teen dies sky-diving on her birthday (video)

A spontaneous teen celebrating her 18th birthday tragically died after her parchetue failed to open while skydiving.

Vanessa Ivonne Melendez Cardenas decided to celebrate her birthday with a parachute jump over Tequesquitengo, in Morelos, Mexico over the weekend.

The high school student and her instructor, Mauricio Gutiérrez Castillo, 34, prepared for the jump on Sunday. But shocking footage filmed from the ground, shows the horrible moment when the two fell 1,300ft to their death after they couldn’t get their parachute to open.

As the video begins, four other skydivers can be seen safely descending from the sky after deploying their parachute. However, in the background of the video, two people are falling to the ground at a rapid pace.

Mexico Herald reported that at around 3:43 pm the same day, company staff from the Albatroz Aviation Club — which was in charge of the skydiving operations — alerted the authorities about the situation, prompting emergency and security personnel to launch a search for the pair.

Their bodies were eventually located near the Mexico-Acapulco highway and Prosecutor’s Office carried out the removal. The area was also cordoned off by the State Security Commission.

While the company who organized the skydive insists that the fall was not an accident caused by malfunctioning equipment, Jorge Gaitán, the director of Albatros Parachuting, actually believes someone may have manipulated the release mechanism.

He said:

“It wasn’t equipment failure or anything like that. It surely had to do with someone who was on that flight, who manipulated and activated the release mechanism,” the Mirror UK quotes.

“That doesn’t end up happening by accident: it is caused by a human. We are in those investigations. We still do not know what happened.”
