Panic as 4.8 magnitude earthquake hits Kenya and Spain at exact time

The tremor that was felt for several seconds some hundreds of kilometers away in diameter across the country originated from Taita Taveta.

There were reportedly crack on the bridge along a road that passes through Fai Mario (sp) in Naivasha with motorist told to take caution when using the bridge.

At the same time, SPAIN’S Costa Blanca holiday hotspot was shaken by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake.

The quake was recorded just off the Mediterranean coast of Torrevieja according to the state Instituto Geografico Nacional at 5.16pm local time.

A light earthquake hit several counties in Kenyan on Sunday, including Nairobi, Nyeri, Mombasa, Machakos, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Taita Taveta and Kiambu.

Scott Bellows, who is a lecturer at the United States International University-Africa, said those in coastal Kenya (Mombasa, Kilifi, Malindi, Lamu and Diani) should seek higher ground as a precaution.

Mr Bellows, however, is not a geologist but an assistant professor of management at USIU-Africa.

“Leave low lying areas near the beach until given an all clear after geologists pinpoint earthquake epicentre. Possible tsunami,” said Mr Bellows.

As a precaution, those in/around coastal Kenya (Mombasa, Kikifi, Malindi, Lamu, Diana) should seek higher ground.

The Kenya Meteorological Department confirmed the earthquake in a phone call to NTV Kenya but said there is no cause for alarm.

According to the www.earthquaketrack.com, a 4.8 magnitude quake hit Wundanyi in Taita Taveta County at 7.21pm.
