4.8 magnitude Earthquake hits Naivasha bridge paralyzing transport

Tremors were reported in several parts of the country after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the country with the epicenter reported to have originated from Taita Taveta.

An image was also published online after an earthquake tracker showed the effect of a quake that hit Spain about the same time tremors were reported in Nairobi on March 24, 2019.

After the tremors, lights went out in several counties even though it is not clear that the black out was linked to the earthquake.

Kenya National Highways Authority said a fault has been cited along the Naivasha – Mai Mahiu Road, at Fai Amario area, about eight kilometers from Naivasha Town.

Traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru warned that a bridge that links a section of the road in the region had developed cracks and added traffic personnel had been deployed to direct traffic flow.
KeNHA said its engineers are on site monitoring any resultant damages to the road surface.

Panic stricken residents in Nairobi had evacuated at least six high rise buildings following the reports.

list of precautions people should observe in case on an earthquake:

  1. Do not panic.
  2. Do not rush out immediately during the Earthquake – Earthquakes last only a few seconds.
  3. Look for a safe corner – preferably where there is a firm steel column. Avoid the centre of a building where objects can collapse on you.
  4. If there is a heavy table, hide underneath it because it will shield you from falling objects.
  5. Switch off non-crucial lights, water and any gas.
  6. When the situation has stabilized, walk out of the building.
  7. Do not use lifts – use stairs.
  8. Stand far away from buildings.
