Govt in urgent need of Ksh 6B to end hunger in counties

According to a resident in Baringo county , Mr Kiptoo she questions why the government is disputing hunger relating deaths yet he lost his own father to hunger.

Mr Kiptoo wondered, adding that they informed the local chief who assisted them bury him.

“Some of us have gone without food for several days; and we fear that we will also follow suit if no urgent intervention is made. We are even yet to get the food aid.”

The government has however said that it requires Ksh 6 billion to combat the ongoing drought in the 12 counties that have been hit hard.

Devolution Chief Administrative Secretary Hussein Dhadho has asked Parliament to approve the allocation to address the emergency.

He said about 165,000 people in Tana River, Kilifi and Kwale counties have been affected. Of these 63,000 people are in Kilifi, 50,000 in Tana River and 45,000 in Kwale.

“The government has put in place mechanisms to send some money to poor people, orphans and the disabled to enable them help themselves instead of waiting for relief food,” Mr Dhadho said.

Five people have been reported dead at Lojere village in Turkana south from starvation. The prolonged drought has also resulted in the death of livestock, paralyzing the economy of people whose livelihoods is centered on
livestock keeping.
