Drought stricken poor Turkana people, orphans and the disabled to be sent money

More than five people have been reported dead at Lojere village in Turkana south from starvation. The prolonged drought has also resulted in the death of livestock, paralyzing the economy of people whose livelihoods is centered on livestock keeping.

Frail faces of children, the elderly and expectant mothers — the worst hit after men went further afield in search of pasture and water for their livestock — are a picture of a humanitarian crisis.

The government urgently needs Sh6 billion to stem the hunger ravaging parts of the country, the Devolution ministry says.

Speaking in a meeting with the National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in Mombasa, Devolution Chief Administrative Secretary Hussein Dhadho has asked Parliament to approve the allocation to address the emergency.

At Cherelyo village in Loyamorok ward a fresh grave of 58-year-old Joseph Kiptoo, whose family says he succumbed to a hunger-related illness on Sunday, stared at us, a mound of stones and dry shrubs some 50 metres from the compound.

His home, a dilapidated structure, whose rafters were almost falling, revealed the levels of poverty in the area.

He blamed county governments for allowing the situation to get out of hand.

“County governments are supposed to be the first line of defence. Each county needs to have special funds on disaster mitigation during times of drought. Had they moved faster we wouldn’t have heard of such stories,” Mr Dhadho said.
