DCIO to investigate police who launched teargas into woman’s home

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has directed criminal investigations officers in Mpeketoni to start immediate investigations in a case where police threw tear gas canisters into a house belonging to a local woman by the name Mama Aisha causing the destruction of her property.

Haji gave the orders after visiting Mama Aisha’s house in Mpeketoni town where he directed the DCIO to start investigations with the station commander and all officers who participated in throwing tear gas and even those that gave orders.

He said investigations should not spare any individual no matter what their position is.

The DPP  said that everyone is entitled to police protection warning officers who take directives from politicians to instead expend their energy in fighting Alshabaab and not innocent Kenyans.

A month ago former governor Issa Timamy was in a meet the people tour when police disrupted the function saying the meeting was illegal.

Hundreds of supporters had converged at Mpeketoni’s new stage to meet the ex-governor only to be chased away by the police.

Timamy had been on a week-long tour of Lamu County to thank them for their support during his petition against current governor, a battle he lost at the Supreme Court.

His tour took him to Lamu town, Ndau village in Lamu East as well as Witu, Katsaka Kairu and Maisha Masha villages.

This was Timamy’s first public appearance in the region since he lost the governor’s seat to Fahim Twaha in 2017.
