Scientists Les and Paula Ansley have made history after creating South Africa’s first ever elephant dung gin. The two are reported to have conjured the idea while on a safari trip to Kenya and haven’t looked back since, The South African reported.

We can’t blame them really, taking a Safari to watch the breath-taking wildlife scenery in Kenya is bound to inspire greatness. Take for example this picture that lit up netizens taken two days ago at the Nairobi National Park.

According to the creators of this unique drink their love for Africa and their love for the gin is what gave birth to the dung gin.

“The original idea for elephant dung gin came from marrying the love of Africa and its wildlife with the love of gin,” they said. “We are both scientists and therefore inclined towards novel ideas and problem solving, so when Paula had the idea we really wanted to see whether it would actually be possible. The more we explored the concept the more it opened up and the more excited we became,” they added.

The process that turns the elephant poop into gin is a thorough one and involves killing all the negative bacteria in the dung.

According to the scientist, elephants naturally graze on foliage that includes a host of fragrant botanicals which contain similar flavours used in gins the world over.

On top of this, a great deal of what elephants consume is left undigested, so the plant-based dung is perfect for gin infusion.

Passionate about the outdoors and African wildlife, the company also gives 15% from the sale of every Indlovu gin bottle to nature conservation.
