Why England and Manchester United’s Rashford is likely to miss their clash with Czech Republic

Marcus Rashford is set to miss England’s opening Euro 2020 qualifier with Czech Republic on Friday night, reports indicate.

It has been revealed that Rashford was a major doubt with an ankle injury suffered in the Premier League clash with Liverpool last month

Rashford was the only player not to train on Thursday morning which therefore means he is likely to have to sit out Friday’s encounter at Wembley. That could mean a first competitive start for wonder kid Jadon Sancho as England start their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

The Football Association have insisted Rashford will not withdraw but if he misses the game then they may think again before taking him to Montenegro.

Manchester United will be watching developments closely and will be anxious particularly with Romelu Lukaku already out of the Belgium squad with injury.

Rashford has been struggling with the ankle injury for the past few weeks because of restricted movement and twisting and turning.

England boss Gareth Southgate will also be concerned as Rashford has been in great form despite playing through the pain barrier in recent games.

It is another blow for Southgate who has lost John Stones, Fabian Delph, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Luke Shaw and Trent Alexander-Arnold from the original squad because of injury.

Those withdrawals have led to the call-ups of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Chelsea’s 18-year-old wonderkid Callum Hudson-Odoi.
