‘Mzungu’ High Commissioner Impressed By Matwana Culture!

It’s rare we see foreign commisioners and ambassadors appreciating some of Kenya’s finer things such as our unique matwana culture.

Nevertheless, Kenyans were pleasantly surprised when the

The UK High Commissioner to Kenya Nick Hailey recently set aside matters of national significance to give credit to the hype that is matatu culture in the country.

Hailey was on Thursday, March 21, left quite stunned by a particular artwork in one of the PSVs operating around the which dawned a large portrait of Kenya and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama.

In a tweet, Hailey, a Tottenham fan, could not help but gush at the photo of Wanyama not only because it looked quite majestic, but because the matatu handlers decided to try something different.

“Good to see Wanyama on a matatu this morning – still too many Wenger/Ferguson/Mourinho designs around which haven’t caught up that Spurs is the team to follow,” he said.

Typically, when it comes to representing football clubs, most matatus prefer the so-called traditional Big Four of Manchester United, Arsenal Chelsea and Liverpool.

The likes of Manchester City, who have experienced massive upsurge in the last decade have also grown in popularity in Kenya while Tottenham’s fanbase was greatly aided by Wanyama’s sensational transfer to the London club in 2015 from Southampton.
