Arsenal record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was given heroic welcome by Gabonese football fans after returning to Gabon for this month’s FIFA international break.

The 29-year-old forward has been impressive for the Gunners this campaign having scored 22 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions. He was however mobbed by fans when he touched down in the city of Libreville on Wednesday night, with the supporters chanting his name as his brother, Willy captured the moment.

As it stands, Gabon are third on Group C table with seven points – two behind their next foe and only victory will guarantee them a place in the first ever summer AFCON championship.

Daily Mail reports that the supporters gave the striker all the motivation needed to inspire his side to victory and subsequently book a place in the finals of the competition.

Aubameyang’s brother, Willy was at the player’s back as he struggled to move through the packed crowd, who were clearly delighted to see him back on home soil.

His return home will also douse the doubts of some of the fans who were unsure of Aubameyang’s commitment to the national team.

The 29-year-old was not available in Gabon’s last two games – a 1-0 win over South Sudan and a 1-0 defeat by Mali – despite having been named in both squads. Meanwhile, no official statement was released for boycotting both games, while reports at other quarters claim he was unhappy with the plane Gabon had chartered for the journey.

Aubameyang then missed the match with Mali amid claims that he was set to retire from international duty at the age of 29. However, manager Daniel Cousin dismissed those fears last week, telling the Gabonese News Agency: “Pierre is indeed summoned.

“I did not receive any document from his club signalling his refusal to take part in this match. He knows what I think and expect of him.” The pressure will be firmly on Aubameyang’s shoulders on Saturday with Gabon needing a win to progress to this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

It was earlier reported that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seem to be enjoying himself despite not participating at this summer’s FIFA World Cup currently ongoing in Russia.

The Gabonese superstar joined the Gunners in January 2018 from German League side Borussia Dortmund in a four-year deal valued at £55 million (€63,75m) plus £5m in add-ons.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old super-striker was sighted showing off his private jet as he was pictured sitting down on the right wing of the aircraft.
