The proposal by a local technology company to set up a research and development centre at Konza is in line with Konza Technopolis aspiration of becoming a technology hub in Africa through the establishment of a research and development centre. The project will not only lead to technological advancements, but also increased employment opportunities.

Whitespace Technologies Ltd, a local technology company, has been allocated land to set up its head office and a research and development centre at Konza Technopolis. The investment, estimated at Ksh500 million, will position the company as a regional player and enhance innovation.

According to Mr Bernard Babu, the CEO of Whitespace Technologies Ltd (WTL), the research and development centre will be utilized for research into new technologies, ways to better current technologies, training and development of new solutions that can be commercialized.

Whitespace has undertaken key projects among them fibre backbone laying for companies such as Safaricom, Huawei Technologies, Kenya Power and Standard Gauge Railway. In the past four years Whitespace has grown its revenue from Ksh60 million to Ksh1 billion annually.

The company plans to commence the Konza project in July 2019 which is expected to take about 21 months to complete. The project will also include the construction of a storage facility for machinery and equipment

WTL specializes in installation and commissioning services, repairs and maintenance of fibre optic systems, wireless telecommunications and internet networks.
