While raising money for people starving in Turkana and Baringo may seem like a noble move, some Kenyans have openly opposed the move citing different reasons.
Akothee is spearheading a campaign to raise money for starving Kenyans in Turkana and Baringo. The singer managed to raise over Kes 1.5 million in 24 hours.
A similar funds drive dubbed ‘Kenyans for Kenya’ was started in July 2011 when the country experience a prolonged drought. Kenyans responded and a whopping Ksh 1 billion was raised, many hoped that such scenario of starving Kenyans would be averted in future.
Eight years later after ‘Kenyans for Kenya’ and once again people are dying of hunger in Kenya. Several Kenyans have now opposed the move to involve the public in raising money for people starving.
Many claim the government has allocated enough resources to counties that have been hit by the famine.
Among those who subscribe to this school of thought are P Unit rappers Gabu and Frasha.
Gabu took to social media to explain in detail why he opposes ‘paybill’, he wrote;
Hii gov yetu imetuzoea sana .Hawatupei kazi na bado wanataka mchango .I am totally opposed to any Kenyan straining his or her pocket further to throw some cash to M-Changa or Paybill account to feed Kenyans starving in Turkana, I wish to incite the readers of this post to desist from doing so.
I know it sounds mean but let’s be realistic:
“This is not donation or charity from the philanthropic Ruto or Uhuru but taxpayers sweat shared to Turkana via the National government.”
“Somebody make me understand how such a rich county could experience death as a result of drought, yesterday I said drought is not an accident, It is not an abrupt happening like the typhoons, it is foreseeable.
Allow me to repeat the same. It is not the first time Turkana is experiencing drought.”
His sentiments were also echoed by Frasha;
“I agree 100% bt let me say this change shall not come from IG and what’s app groups its high time the youth realised they are the majority and they have the power to change this country.How can we be talking of drought in the 21st century yet contries which are deserts give us relief food e.g. Israel yet our country is know in the world to be an agricultural hub.Youth get agitated get mad get concerned wake up and fight for this country .This country needs you #wakeupkenyanyouth #itstartswithme,”
