Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shelves Gabon retirement

France Football have confirmed that Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will join up with the Gabon squad on Tuesday.

There have been doubts concerning whether Aubameyang would turn up for international duty.

The Arsenal striker has only played twice in Gabon’s last five matches.

Moreover, despite previously being called up to the national squad, Aubameyang didn’t show up for games against South Sudan and Mali.

In a boost for Gabon before an Afrcian Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi, France Football have told their readers:

After several days of waiting and uncertainty, Gabon can now fully focus on the preparation of the decisive match against Burundi, Friday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (29), has decided to honour the call-up from Daniel Cousin, the coach of the Panthers.

Could Arsenal’s Aubameyang retire from international football?
Suggestions that Aubameyang may soon retire from Gabon matches were brought up by the Arsenal star himself.

Aubameyang recently sat down with French TV show Talents d’Afrique, where he floated the possibility of his international retirement:

I am thinking hard about retiring from international football.

I am honestly asking myself that question. Sadly I have come to this point, and I am going to make a decision.

It could come before or after our next game against Burundi [on March 23].

Normally I would go if called up, but I am hesitating because I want to make matters improve.

I would love Gabon to qualify for the African Nations Cup finals. But if things don’t improve I don’t see the point of going.

I am waiting for changes to be made. We always end up in the same situation on the eve of matches, asking questions we shouldn’t need to ask.

I want football to become more professional in Gabon. It is what the players deserve. That is what is lacking, and it is the reason why I sometimes don’t turn up to play.

I am extremely disappointed by the behaviour of certain people – both in the Gabon FA and higher up.
