3 suspects nabbed after Ksh17B fake currency uncovered at Barclays Bank

The Flying Squad unit reportedly discovered a safety deposit box containing Ksh17 billion in fake currency at Barclays Bank, Queens way branch in Nairobi.

A statement released by K24 revealed that a Tuesday raid at the branch located along Mama Ngina street led to the discovery of the large consignment of fake currency

“Flying Squad discover a safe containing Ksh17 billion fake currency at Barclays Bank, Queens way branch,” stated K24.

According to reports from Daily Nation, the security authorities were camped at the bank in a bid to uncover a fake currency syndicate.

“Flying Squad and DCI officers camp at Barclays Bank Kenya, Queensway branch, Nairobi; sources say team investigating fake currency syndicate,” nation revealed.

However the Barclays bank Queens branch could not affirm the actual amount as the bank declined to confirm owing to the sensitivity of the issue.

Citizen TV, on the other hand, reported that the raid by flying squad officials was as a result of the trailing of 3 suspects that ended up at the Queensway branch.

They were then nabbed by the officers as they stashed Ksh17 billion in a safety deposit box. According to the report, it was not yet established whether the currency was actually fake or real.

As at the time of publishing, the three suspects were being interrogated at the bank premises, with no formal statement released by the police yet.

The latest fake currency bust comes barely a month since one of the biggest busts took place at a house in Ruiru, in which Ksh 32 billion was confiscated.
