Reason why DCI Officer was arrested in the course of suicide investigation

Constable Phenix Oduya Onyango, who was recently transferred to the Kilifi Police Station from Merti, Isiolo County was arrested and locked up at the Malindi station.

Police in Kilifi have arrested and detained the detective attached to the DCI for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe of Ksh 40,000 from a hotel staff.

Before his arrest, Onyango was investigating a suicide case involving 22-year-old Grace Emalda Iminza, a third-year student at Pwani University.

“Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives arrested the officer while receiving the treated money amounting to Ksh 40,000 from Hassan Nyale Kiti to avoid implicating him in the death,” a police source that sought anonymity told Nation.

Kiti is an employee at a hotel in Kilifi where the student also worked part-time as a waitress.

Iminza was found dead in the Indian Ocean at the Kilifi bridge in what is suspected to be suicide.

But the Pwani University students and members of the public poked holes in the theory claiming she might have been killed and her body dumped in the ocean.

“It is said the student alighted from a bodaboda near the bridge and walked towards the beach where she was found dead,” narrated one of the Pwani University students.

The DCI officer is set to be arraigned in court and charged.

EACC North Coast Regional Manager, while confirming the incident, told Nation on phone, “The arrest happened when I was away on other official duties.“
