Manchester United are widely expected to sign a winger at the end of the season, despite having Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata all on the books.

So far, names that have been linked include Juventus’ Douglas Costa and Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

Both players have been tipped to move to Manchester United but would cost a sizeable amount. Costa is valued at £70million – and Sancho closer to £100m.

However, United already have an exciting winger on their books. One with the potential to save them a ton in the transfer market.

Step forward Chong.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has set about restoring United as the Premier League superpower they were during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge.

And that means giving youth a chance.

Ferguson was the best at it. It was he who blooded the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt back in the 1990s.

All five are now club legends. And Solskjaer is keen to adopt a similar approach.

Chong has been a beneficiary of that, making his debut in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Reading back in January.

And, with United struck by injuries in recent weeks, the 19-year-old has been a prominent figure.

He was thrown in at the deep end during the Red Devils’ Champions League clash with PSG earlier this month and the teenager impressed as United defied the odds to stun Thomas Tuchel’s side at the Parc des Princes.

United risked a row with Feyenood when they landed him in 2016. But that was because, in their eyes, he was worth the hype.

Chong has impressed in United’s youth set up and impressed in the FA Youth Cup in 2017. Had it not been for a long-term injury, he could have achieved even more that year.

But, so high is the Dutchman’s stock around Old Trafford, it would not be a surprise to see him continue to feature until the end of the season.

Chong is the standout name for the next generation of United stars.

Talk of a loan move away has arisen in recent times. But all signs point to him being one for the now – rather than the future.
