MP reveals message from son before death

Bomet East MP Beatrice Kones has opened up on the last message she received from her son Collins Kipyegon Kalya before the latter committed suicide in controversial circumstances.

Speaking during the funeral service for the deceased, Kones revealed that she received the message while she was away in South Africa attending the PANAFRICAN parliament.

“He sent me a message stating he was taking his life and I should take care of his children. The action was unwarranted as he did not lack anything,” said Mrs Kones.

Mrs Kones expressed concerns over the rising number of suicide cases in the country, noting that it is unfortunate that the current crop of youth cannot cope with life, which has resulted in rising cases of suicide.

The Bomet East lawmaker proposed that “Counselling centres should be set up in every ward in the country to assist youth and the professional counsellors should visit schools”.

The deceased who was the third born of former Minister Kipkalya Kones and Beatrice, died last week in Nakuru town.

Mrs Kones recounted the special bonds she shared with her son, stating that “Kipyegon was my son, my driver and partner in farming enterprise… He was the only apolitical member of the family.”

DP Ruto’s message

Among those who condoled with the family was Deputy Presdent William Ruto whose message was delivered by Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter.

The DP eulogized the deceased as a “hard working independent-minded youth (who) wanted to make a difference for himself, his family and community through farming and was a role model to youths engaged in agriculture.”

“I learnt with great sadness the passing on of Kipyegon and I know how unexpected death of a loved one adds to the grief,” added the DP.
