Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola now wants his former club Bayern Munich to beat Premier league’s rivals Liverpool and join Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals.
This came shortly after City edged out Schalke 04 from the competition in a humiliating 7-0 defeat in a game played on Tuesday night at Etihad Stadium. City cruised into the last eight courtesy of a 10-2 aggregate victory.
City’s progression puts all the three English teams; Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspurs and City in the quarter-final of a Champions League campaign for the first time since 2010/11. .
Liverpool is looking at making the number to four English teams by navigating Wednesday’s last-16 second leg at the Allianz Arena, but Guardiola hopes City’s bitter title rivals stumble at his old club. With a single point on top of Liverpool in Premier League, Manchester City could welcome anything that aims at humiliating its main competitor.
“I’m sorry for the English people but I want Munich to go through, I am part of this club. I love Munich. I love Bayern. I have a lot of friends there.” said Guardiola.
City’s 10-2 aggregate win over Schalke was the biggest-ever by an English side in a Champions League knockout tie.
Liverpool are looking to overturn a 0-0 first leg draw at Anfield and beat Bayern Munich or make any draw with a goal. Livepool progressed to the final of the competition last term but it appears they will be prioritising Premier League glory over European success.
