Over 4,700 delegates are gathered in Nairobi for the fourth United Nations Environment Assembly in Gigiri, where they will take decisions that will move global societies to a more sustainable path.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will host France’ Head of State Emmanuel Macron after the meeting where delegates are said to be pushing resolutions for sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Other resolutions that will be discussed include the commitment to the protection of the marine environment from plastic pollution, reduce food waste, and advance technological innovation that combats climate change, and reduces resource use and biodiversity loss.

This follows statement by Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko that the government was in the process of banning plastic bottles and cutlery.

Speaking at the meeting in Gigiri, Tobiko said this was part of the State’s implementation of proper waste management.

Tobiko said that the government was implementing appropriate solid waste management measures in urban areas to safeguard the environment.

“We are implementing solid waste management policies in Nairobi, Mombasa and other major urban centres to save the environment and health of our people,” the CS stated.

“In Kenya, we banned plastic use in 2017 and we are in the process of banning plastic bottles and cutlery,” he added.
