Hunger strike kills 2 in Turkana County

Two people have been confirmed dead at Kangarisae in Turkana County after spending several weeks without food.

Confirming the incident, area chief, John Ewar said the residents are in dire need of relief food.

Mr. John called on the national, County government as well as non-governmental organizations to step in and help with relief foods.

This also comes after a drought status and response report by the National Drought Management Authority in February listed Turkana among the worst hit regions.

The main areas hit by drought are north region and par of Rift Valley and small section of Nyeri county.

More pupils are going hungry after organizations’ that used to supplement government’s school feeding programmes, suspended their help over delayed funding.

The County education quality and standard assurance officer Mr. Kavai Kisia, said schools were badly affected by the dry spell.

“This has reduced enrolment. This situation will soon depreciate figures of learners in schools,” mr Kavai was quoted.

Mrs Priscilla Ayanae, a resident said the prolonged drought has seen many pupils leave school with most of them now languishing in the streets of Lodwar town.

She claimed that there has been cases of pupils reported collapsing in class because of going for days without food.
