The national soccer team Harambee Stars has suffered a major blow ahead of Group F’s final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match against Ghana slated for March 23, in Accra.
This is after lead striker Michael Ogada Olunga withdrew from the squad due to an injury.
The forward picked up a hamstring injury at the weekend as his Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol beat Albirex Niigata 1-0 in J-League Division two match. Olunga scored the lone goal.
“Influential Harambee Stars forward Michael Olunga is out of contention for a place in Kenya’s final squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Ghana.
This is following a hamstring injury the forward picked up in their 1-0 win over Albirex Niigata that has since ruled him out for the next three weeks,” reads a statement published on the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) website.
The statement states that in his place, Coach Sébastien Migné has called up Zambia based Zesco United forward Jesse Jackson Were.
Harambee Stars players will hit camp on March 17 ahead of the Ghana match.
The match is in itself a formality after the two sides qualified for the 2019 edition from Group F. Egypt will host the tournament between June and July this year.
