The lady received two medals
Viral photos and a video have been making rounds on social media after a lady received medals and cheques twice at the Beyond Zero 2019 Half Marathon.
The lady is said to have received the 10kms award in a white t-shirt as number three and the 21kms award as number one having changed to the purple beyond zero t-shirt.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a communication agent working with Beyond Zero stated that Brilliant Jepkorir, who was supposed to have received the award, was the rightful winner of the 21kms race.
However, she clarified that Ms Maragi received the award on behalf of Jepkorir as she was seeking anti-doping services.
“That’s how they do it for all Elites, to affirm that the win was deserved,” a source stated.
A social media user by the name Joh Boog wrote:
“During the awarding of marathon winners, I witnessed total corruption as a certain lady took two medals and double money.”
“I am writing this because I don’t know whether the right winner will get her medal or her money,” he added.
On the other hand, contrary reports claimed that the lady who received the two medals was one of the event managers who was selected to pick the award on behalf of the absent winners.
The two were participating during the 2019 Beyond Zero Marathon organized by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.
David Kipkoech and Brillian Chepkorir clinched the men’s and women’s 21km title at the Beyond Zero Half Marathon respectively in Nyayo Stadium on Sunday morning.
