Manchester United advanced to the quarter finals of the Champions League after a historic night in Paris. The Red Devils were trailing 2-0 from the first leg match at Old Trafford but showed great spirit and team ethic to win the second leg away from home 3-1, becoming the first team in the history of the Champions League to overturn such a deficit after playing the first leg at home.

The result has been largely celebrated by the Manchester United fan base around the globe , rightly so, while the rest of the footballing world can only stare with envy. Chelsea and Arsenal fans in particular are not happy with the result but they should be.

Had Manchester United been knocked out of the Champions League at this early stage, it would have meant that the team would have put all their efforts on finishing in the top 4 of the English Premier League and winning the FA Cup( Having already knocked out Arsenal and Chelsea).

The win means that Ole Gunnar’s charges are still competing on three fronts this season thus aiding the chances of the other two who are still in contention for a top 4 finish this season.

Their squad is already on it’s bear bones with injuries to key players such as Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and French winger Martial. Their continuous involvement in Europe’s elite competition come with the hope that more injuries and fatigue can hurt their impressive Premier League form, something Arsenal and Chelsea are well equipped to capitalize on.

The race for the top four is very much still on, and Manchester United might have done their rivals a big favor by adding more matches to their already congested fixture list.
