Man Utd penalty: Referees split over controversial VAR decision against PSG

Man Utd’s transformation under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues as victory over Southampton moved them back above Arsenal and into the Champions League qualifying positions.

In a game of outstanding goals, Southampton thought they had secured a point with efforts from Jan Valery rocket and James Ward-Prowse either side of goals from Andreas Pereira and Romelu Lukaku.

However, Lukaku struck in the 88th minute to ensure United moved above Arsenal into fourth place following their north London derby draw against Tottenham in the lunchtime kick-off.

The victory sent United above Arsenal, who missed the chance to tighten their grip on fourth spot with a draw at Tottenham. No easy fixture, but the Gunners missed a stoppage time penalty.

Solskjaer’s men then made history against PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday, reversing a 2-0 deficit from the first leg at Old Trafford with a 3-1 victory in Paris.

Peter Walton

“Well we called it straight away to be fair,” Walton said on BT Sport. “We sat here, we watched it and the way Kimpembe has gone up there, he’s left his arm out, he’s turned his back, he’s took no responsibility for where that ball is striking, he’s made himself bigger.

“The VAR, a huge decision, that’s exactly why VAR has been brought into operation here, we see him jump up there, the VAR has got to make sure that the contact was inside the area so therefore he can then adjudicate on it because it’s a potential penalty kick.

Mark Clattenburg

“Let’s be clear, referee Damir Skomina applied the laws as Uefa wish them to be in awarding Manchester United their late penalty in Paris,” Clattenburg wrote in a column for the Daily Mail.

“But PSG will be furious, and I understand why.

“This, for me, should not have been a penalty as Presnel Kimpembe did not deliberately handle the ball.”
