KAA union officials breathe a sigh of relief after courts directive

Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani has formed a committee to resolve the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) staff dispute.

The High Court has suspended the hearing of an application by KAA seeking to declare the ongoing strike by Kenya Aviation Workers Union illegal to give room for dialogue.

The Employment and Labour Relation judge Justice Onesmus Makau, said since the committee has been appointed by the CS to look into the dispute, the court ought to give it an opportunity to arbitrate the aggrieved parties dispute.

The judge directed that parties have to await the outcome of deliberations by the committee which might resolve dispute between KQ, KAA and aviation workers union.

The CS while addressing the press at his offices, did appoint Sharif Abdukadir as the chairman of the committee and will be assisted by Dr Justus Tony and Linus Kariuki.

The committee has 30 days to resolve the matter.

KQ argued that the union had expressed displeasure of planned public private partnership between it and KAA in the management of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The union officials had filed a case in the High Court but did not secure an order stopping the intended partnership but proceeded to issue strike notice on February 28
