Real Madrid marched into what they must have have hoped would be another of their transformational European nights.

Los Blancos welcomed their Dutch opponents to the Bernabeu a short time ago, for the second-leg of the last-16 tie between the clubs.

Real headed into proceedings with qualification firmly in their grasp, on the back of a hard-fought (and largely-undeserved) 2-1 first-leg win.

The European champions, though, did not exactly head into tonight’s matchup in positive form.

After first being ousted from the Copa Del Rey courtesy of a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Clasico rivals Barcelona last week, Real were then put to the sword by the Blaugrana yet again at the weekend, as Barca took another step towards the La Liga title.

And the struggles of Los Blancos on all-fronts reached new heights altogether tonight, as, in absolutely stunning circumstances, Ajax emerged from the Bernabeu with a fully-deserved 4-1 victory.

Hakim Ziyech put the visitors in front with just 7 minutes on the clock, before David Neres doubled Ajax’s lead inside the opening 20 minutes, sending the travelling fans into rapturous celebrations:

And Dusan Tadic, who was in irresistible form throughout the 90 minutes in Madrid, made it 3 fifteen minutes into the second-half, with a stunning left-footed finish.

Real looked to have restored some hope of a late-great comeback when Marco Asensio’s pinpoint strike found the bottom-corner in the 70th-minute, but the tie was put to bed once and for all just 2 minutes later, as Lasse Schone’s bending free-kick evaded Thibaut Courtois to nestle in the far corner:
