Atwoli condemns the arrest of KAWU officials

Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) has condemned arbitrary arrest of Kenya Aviation Workers Union chairman Moss Ndiema and harassment of union members.

The COTU said it will continue to stand in solidarity with workers in the aviation industry who are protesting against planned takeover of the airport by Kenya Airways (KQ).

“We strongly Condemn the violation of Workers right, through arrests, abuse, assault, humiliation and intimidation can never win. Solidarity in with aviation sector workers,” COTU said.

Such sentiments were echoed by Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Union boss Ouma Oluga who said workers of all sectors will not be intimidated into silence.

” You mobilize police to beat up striking workers and then expect them to attend to your important selves efficiently later on because you are flying to Geneva and cannot miss a meeting. Workers of all sectors will not take these kind of stuff lying down,” he noted.

By 11am several planes destined for various destinations remained grounded at the Africa’s fourth airport after which airlines including KQ rescheduled flights.

Even though the merger between KQ and Kenya Airports Authority is hoped will ensure expansion of services offered by the national carrier, demonstrating staff read malice. Upon implementation, loss-making KQ add to its menu ground handling, warehousing, maintenance, catering and cargo services as well staff and operations of the state body.

“It is only after resignation of KQ and KAA top managers that workers in this industry will have the confidence the issues affecting them will be addressed,” Ndiema said shortly before he was driven to undisclosed location.
