A Doomsday prophecy declared on the handshake with Ruto inflicted with pain

It is almost one year since the March 9, 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The handshake restored calm in the country following the 2017 general election that had caused political divisions in the country.

The truce between Uhuru and Raila was lauded by politicians across the political divide.

As Kenyans celebrate the handshake, former Lagdera MP Farah Maalim through his Twitter handle now says the handshake is likely to lead to three things.

1. Revalidation of political fortunes

Maalim argues that the handshake will revalidate the political fortunes of president Kenyatta and Raila.

He observes that the country through the proposed referendum is likely to adopt a parliamentary system that will have a prime minister and a ceremonial president.

2. Remove DP Ruto from 2022 equation

Maalim argues that the handshake could end up removing Deputy President William Ruto from the 2022 equation.

The deputy president is among top politicians who are eyeing to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.

A section of DP Ruto’s allies has been quoted questioning Raila’s agenda in the handshake.

3. Tame Somali community through census

Maalim on his Twitter handle claims that the handshake could work against the Somali community in regards to the planned August census, representation and the community’s economics.

The Building Bridges Commitee that was formed to collect Kenyans views on the handshake is currently documenting opinions.

The committee co-chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji and Busia Senator Amos Wako is expected to give its report in May.

This comes as the debate on referendum continues to gain momentum across the political divide.
