Manchester United players believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has restored the ‘old United’ spirit to the club and remain hopeful he will be appointed manager on a permanent basis. United have claimed 32 points from a possible 36 during their 12-match unbeaten Premier League run under caretaker coach Solskjaer, who has lost just one of his 16 games in charge.

It is understood the United players feel the atmosphere around the club is like ‘old United’ and have been impressed with how Solskjaer has tactfully handled the dressing room egos since his appointment on December 19. Support for Solskjaer to be made full-time manager has increased since the significant win over Tottenham in January and the dressing room consensus is Solskjaer deserves the job.

Solskjaer described the 3-2 comeback against Southampton on Saturday like ‘the old days’ after United came from behind to win for the first time on his managerial watch.

“Yeah, the manner of it is like the old days,” Solskjaer said. “I’ve been part of that so many times myself and so pleased for the boys that they managed to claw three points out of this game.

“We spoke about at half-time, just get some more urgency get the ball in the box, play more forward and the Stretford End will suck the ball in for you.

“I don’t want to take much away from Andreas and Romelu’s great finishes but we felt that support is just part of this club, this history, we’ve done it so many times before.”

Solskjaer’s main contender, Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino, is understood to covet the United manager’s job but United’s remarkable resurgence – as well as Spurs’ domestic cup ejections and three-game winless league run – have ensured Solskjaer is the clear frontrunner. The Norwegian’s agent Jim Solbakken met executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and co-owner Avram Glazer in London last month and Woodward visited United’s Carrington training complex on Friday, though senior sources stressed it was merely ‘routine’.

Woodward indicated in the United investors’ call last month the club would not make another announcement on the managerial situation until the end of the season, amid speculation United have privately decided to install Solskjaer as the indefinite successor to Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer moved out of The Lowry Hotel last month. The 46-year-old also confirmed on Friday he had informed Woodward which players needed to come and go in the summer transfer window and had filmed a season ticket promo for next season.
