Liverpool set to make their defence unbeatable

Jurgen Klopp finally spot the perfect match for Van Dijk at Liverpool’s heart of defence

According reports in All Football, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly interested in signing Matthias Ginter – who he previously bought while in charge of Dortmund. Ginter moved to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017, and it seems the Reds manager has continued to monitor the defender’s career in Germany. Klopp has a number of top centre-backs at his disposal, with the best in the Premier League in Virgil van Dijk the first name on his teamsheet.

Joe Gomez appears to be Klopp’s favoured partner for the Holland international, but Dejan Lovren and more recently Joel Matip have stood alongside Van Dijk at the back this season. According to Calciomercato, Klopp isn’t entirely convinced by Matip and is looking into the possibility of replacing him with Ginter. Klopp knows the World Cup winner well, and was the man who parted with £9million to sign him from Freiburg for Dortmund back in 2014.

Ginter’s Monchengladbach side were battered 5-1 by Bayern Munich on the weekend, in what was a tough game for the German: “We made too many mistakes and made it too easy for Bayern,” Ginter told his club’s official website. “They created a lot of chances after they went 3-1 up and deserved to win in the end.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has claimed that the pressure will now be on league leaders Manchester City to not drop any points, after his team fell below the defending champions following the draw against Everton. The Toffees held the Reds to a goalless draw, bringing an end to the latter’s run at the top of the table, with City finally catching up with them after having fallen behind by seven points at one point of the season. With the Sky Blues having won their game, even if it was by just one goal, Robertson believes that the pressure will now be on them to maintain the lead.

“We become the chasers now and all the pressure is on Manchester City,” he told the BBC, according to Goal. “We will fight for every last ball until the whistle is blown at the end of the season. The pressure has been on City because they are expected to retain the title. Everton think they have stopped us from winning the league. It shows how well we are doing that they want to stop us.”

Both Liverpool and Manchester City will be looking to win their next nine games, as they cannot afford to drop any more points with the gap between them only one point. The teams have a couple of tough fixtures to look forward to, and how they end up playing in those could very well determine whether it will be Liverpool’s turn to win the Premier League title or if Manchester City are able to defend the title.
