The Courts Yet Again Lenient on Graft As Ex-Senator Fined Kshs 660k after stealing Ksh 1.7million

The court has shown yet again that it has no mettle when it comes to dealing with graft.

Former Nominated Senator Joy Gwendo will now have to part with KSh 660,000 as fine or spend a year in jail after the High Court revised her sentence, in a case where she pleaded guilty of stealing KSh 1.7 million .

Gwendo appealed after she was sentenced to two years in jail by Chief magistrate Douglas Ogoti on December 7, 2018.

Justice John Onyiego said it was wrong for the trial magistrate to impose a jail term without the option of a fine.

The judge in sentencing the former legislator said the money she stole had been fully paid.

“A sentence of fine will be the most appropriate so as to send a message crime does not pay,” the judge said.
