Suspect charged with trafficking 36 Kenyans to Middle East released on cash bail

Hassan Rajab Namukhabwa was charged with illegally trafficking 36 adult women contrary to counter trafficking of persons Act (2010).He denied the charges when he appeared before Kakamega Resident Magistrate William Lopokoiyit.

The suspect was granted Sh100,000 bond with a surety of similar amount or alternative cash bail of Sh20,000.According to the charge sheet, the accused had committed the offence on diverse dates between February 23 and March 1 at St Lukes International Secondary School.

The accused is alleged to have gone round to several parts of the country recruiting desperate women with Al Hujra Company with a promise their destination will be the Arab countries especially Saudi Arabia.

He was arrested at the school where he had allegedly housed them looking for more recruits awaiting their details to be captured to facilitate registration.

According to court documents also supplied to the defense, the accused had taken advantage to tour the larger Kakamega County recruiting jobless women requiring them to supply their birth certificates and Identification (ID) Cards.

Rajab, prosecution alleges, had duped the school management that he was housing them for a religious seminar that would take a few days.However, the school administration read malice on the fourth day of their stay at the institution since there was no activity going on.

The administration wondered why the complainants were all women and the seminar that was purportedly to take place was not taking place.

Officers from Mumias Police Station were alerted after which swiftly moved to the school where they rescued the women.

The complainants who had also been arrested alongside Rajab were released unconditionally after the investigating officers found that they had been held at the institution since they were desperate for jobs.The matter is to be mentioned on March 18 and heard on April 18.
