As more details emerge in the ongoing investigations over Lawyer Robert Chesang’s gruesome murder, the Directorate for Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the weekend arrested a serving and a former police officer in relation to the killing of city lawyer Robert Chesang in Machakos.

The retired officer was apprehended in Baragoi, Samburu and brought to Nairobi on Sunday. He is reported to have served in a senior position in the police service.

Detectives indicated the former serviceman was the mastermind behind organizing the operation that left Chesang dead after being shot seven times.

They are confident that the officer was also the link between the killers and the wife of the deceased, who is accused of wanting him dead and organizing for the same.

The other officer, who is attached to Mutine Police was taken into custody when he surrendered on Saturday.

Earlier on Wednesday, another officer attached to the Riruta Police Station was arrested and his firearm confiscated.

The officer was apprehended after the DCI officers determined he was the owner of the vehicle used to ferry the killers to Mr Chesang’s house.

Officers from Athi River went to Mutuine Police Station and confiscated eight AK-47 rifles for ballistic tests. They suspected that two of the rifles could have been used in the attack on Chesang.

Investigators are analyzing phone records, security footage at the Moke Estate and those at the National Police Service Integrated Communication Command Centre to determine the movement of the vehicle.

The investigators believe the car had been at the estate three times before the lawyer was murdered.

Reports also indicate that two assailants went to the house, tied the guard and proceeded to murder the lawyer in cold blood.

In a report by The Standard, an investigating officer revealed that one of the arrested suspects posed as an intelligence officer and approached his colleagues claiming that Chesang was criminal that the government needed to eliminate.

The suspect allegedly told the serving police officers that the Government wanted Chesang eliminated since he had “disturbed the system for long.”

Further investigations also revealed that the suspect offered the killer cops Ksh 181,000 to execute the lawyer.

“One officer has confessed he pulled the trigger. They were sent by one of the suspects in custody to eliminate Chesang after being duped that he was a criminal,” informed the officer who requested anonymity since he is not authorized to speak to the media.

The 45-year-old lawyer was killed at noon on February 17.

Other than the officers, the DCI indicated that two others will be arraigned in court on Monday, in addition to the wife, who is the prime suspect in the case.
