Raila moves to salvage collapsing sugar cane industries in Nyanza

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga has said that sugar stakeholders will have a major meeting in Kisumu.

While speaking live from Nairobi’s Capitol Hill office on Monday morning, the former premier said that he will lead the meeting will be held on Monday, March 11, 2019, in Kisumu.

He said that among the issues to be discussed at the meeting will be the privatisation of sugar companies, payment of farmers, investment of new machinery among others, as a way of ensuring that money is pumped into the sector.

“Many sugarcane farmers are crying because they have not been paid even after taking their cane to various industries. That is why I sat down with the President and we have agreed that we will have a meeting with leaders in the sugar sector on March 11, 2019, in Kisumu to discuss the issue of privatisation of the sugar sector,” he disclosed.

“We want investors to bring new machines and money so that we end the challenges being witnessed in the sugar sector,” he added.

He was speaking after holding a meeting with a section of leaders where they discussed plans of improving the sugar sector so that farmers who have taken their sugarcane to public millers such as Muhoroni, Sony, Nzoia and Chemelil get their dues.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Festus Mwangi Kiunjuri, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Chairperson of the Privatisation Commission, former Funyula MP Paul Nyonyesa Otuoma.
