Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta to endorse a woman as his successor in the forthcoming 2022 general election. Speaking during closure of a UN plenary session in Nairobi on Friday, the Governor lauded President Kenyatta for acknowledging that the country can have a female president.

“I am happy the president is hoping that Kenya can have a female president, that is the way to think,” she said. Governor Ngilu said a female president is best suited to address issues facing the country and drive the development agenda forward. She said that a woman president will fearlessly lead the war against graft. Governor Ngilu further proposed changes to the constitution in terms of leadership and representation. “We can set minimums to the constitution that if the president will be a man either the deputy or the prime minister must be a woman,” she added. Governor Ngilu went to the history books as the first woman to contest for the presidency in 1997.
