DCI execute duo moving illegal ammunition from Uganda

Two suspects transporting illegal ammunition from Uganda were ambushed and gunned down by police officers at Kitalakapel, West Pokot County.

The police recovered 1,850 rounds of ammunition during the incident, which they suspect was being transported to banditry prone areas in the region. The two identified as Lonyang Karen, 29 and Kopuonyang Achom, 42, were killed by detectives from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who were trailing them on Wednesday evening.

West Pokot police commander Mathews Kuto said the detectives had received a tip-off about the duo’s movement. He added that the DCI officers went to Kitalakapel and laid an ambush where they killed the two criminals.

“The suspects who were aboard a motorcycle refused to stop after being flagged down by the detectives. The criminals were well organized and attempted to escape,” Kuto said. “When the police gave a chase, the suspects fired at the officers forcing them to return fire killing two on the spot. On checking the sack carried on the motorcycle KMDE 850 Z officers recovered 1,850 rounds of ammunition,” he added.

Their bodies were taken to Kapenguria County Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.”We could not establish how many suspects escaped during the incident and how many guns they were carrying,” he said.

Kuto noted that the ammunition was from Uganda and was intended to be sold within the county or neighbouring counties where they been having insecurity challenges. Kuto added that the incident confirmed the source of illegal firearms used to fuel banditry along the Turkana-West Pokot border. He urged the residents to report to the police whenever they notice ammunition being transported.
