Following a publication on the weakening of the Tanzanian Shilling against the dollar, Tanzanian authorities suspended local daily Citizen Newspaper.

In its letter to Citizen Newspaper, Registrar of Newspapers Patrick Kipangula accused the paper of failing to follow due procedure.

It further said that the decision to suspend the paper was brought about by previous publication of misleading articles.

On the said currency article, the newspaper is said to have overlooked financial standards set by the Central bank.

This comes amid allegations that the country suppresses freedom of press.

Several Newspapers in Tanzania have since 2015 either been shut down or suspended following new restrictive laws on freedom of expression by the government.
