Magufuri Suspends NewsPaper Over Shilling Fall Report

The Magufuri led Tanzanian government has banned the publication of The Citizen newspaper for seven days with authorities accusing the paper, which is by owned by Mwananchi Communications Limited, of running story on fall of the shilling against the dollar.

On its website, the newspaper said the move came after it ran a story reporting a shilling fall. The Citizen had quoted a random survey of foreign exchange bureaus in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial capital, which indicated one US dollar was going for Tsh 2,415.

According to media reports further from Tanzania, The Citizen was accused of publishing false information in the story on February 23. Mwananchi Communications is owned by Nation Media Group (NMG). Since occupying presidency in 2015, Magufuri has presided over the suppression of the rights of expression, arrestsof journalists and detaining his opponents.
