Speaking during an interview on NTV’s Am Live on Tuesday, Khalwale said that the move was not only ill-timed but also ill-advised.

Khalwale noted that the arrest of unemployed youths for not repaying their loans is the last thing the government can do.

He instead called upon the government to ensure that youths get jobs before they are asked to pay back their loans from the government.

He also noted that most of the youth are poor and they cannot afford to repay their loans unless they are given formal jobs, which has not been the case since the Jubilee regime ascended to power.

“I want to tell Education CS Amina Mohamed to stop experimenting with the lives of our youth. They cannot raise universities’ fees by 200%. It is going to result in 99% of the children of the poor dropping out of university,” he said.

The call to arrest the defaulters has continued to face massive criticism from different factions. Senator Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi and his Makueni Counterpart Mutula Kilonzo Junior are among those who have opposed the idea.
